Rebuilding Together Greater Milwaukee’s (RTGM) mission is to provide free, professional-quality home repairs for low-income homeowners who are senior citizens and/or persons with disabilities who live in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties.

Our Vision is to have engaged, independent homeowners living in safer, stronger, and more stable neighborhoods throughout the Greater Milwaukee area.

The target population that Rebuilding Together focuses on is low-income elderly and disabled individuals who own homes in the Greater Milwaukee area. In Milwaukee, persons over age 60 make up slightly more than 30% of the entire population and thirty-eight percent of those live in low-income households.

Rebuilding Together's Rebuilding Day is a national one day event that takes place in the spring. On this day corporations and volunteers work on 15- 18 homes that are owned by low-income elderly or disabled individuals. The day is full of activity as over 750 volunteers donate their skills and sweat equity to complete numerous repairs, accessibility updates, and overall cleanup. Materials, supplies, and professional services are frequently donated to ensure that all homeowners are left with a safe and healthy environment.

To meet the goal of creating a safe environment for elderly and disabled homeowners, Rebuilding Together purchases and installs specialty products. These products modify appliances and other basic household fixtures that frequently present a challenge to operate for homeowners who have physical limitations. Items commonly installed or constructed by Rebuilding Together are medical assistive devices, ramps, door levers, walk-in showers, handrails, grab bars in bathrooms, or a washer-dryer unit installed on the main floor of a home. The products we need are specialized and therefore expensive. Rebuilding Together works with our partners to purchase these products and have the products properly installed by professionals.

From time to time we all find ourselves with a plumbing problem, furnace issue or even an electrical problem. Most of the time we are able to fix the problem ourselves, call a friend to help, or hire a professional to do the job that has either put our home or health in risk. The clients we serve have these same challenges coupled with complications of being low-income elderly, and/or disabled. These unsafe and potentially harmful situations come to light during home visits that occur year-round. Our Emergency Repair program is one that is designed to help our most vulnerable homeowners address these problems.

Rebuilding Together has partnerships with diverse organizations and businesses that share the same goal of keeping elderly homeowners in a safe environment where they can age with dignity. As collaborating agencies, we provide elderly homeowners with the tools they need to ensure their continuous contributions to the neighborhoods where they live. Some of the types of agencies who help us meet our goals are health and community organizations such as the Milwaukee Department on Aging and Layton Boulevard West Neighbors

Heroes At Home is a collaborative program sponsored by Sears Holdings. The goal of the program is to make vital home repairs and modifications for past and present U. S. Military Service members and their families who own their own homes.

Similar to the goals of Heroes At Home, STWS focuses on meeting the needs of injured veterans returning from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This program provides home modifications and essential accommodations to allow veterans or soldiers to return and live in their own homes.
